Huipil (pronounced wee-peel) is the Spanish word for the traditional woven blouses worn by Mayan women for many centuries. They are still worn in Guatemala today and these woven shirts are now being made into beautiful and unique purses and other woven products. The weave or design of each huipil can identify the woman who wears it; her village, personality, marital status, etc. are all represented within the fabric. When you purchase one of our Guatemalan huipil purses you are not only receiving a one of a kind, beautifully made purse but you are also helping to support the Mayan culture and the local artisans who are maintaining this tradition. Usually taking several months to complete, each huipil is a work of art that is so well made that it can last up to 30 years.
